At the heart of the WA12 MKII Black sits the X731 discrete op-amp, a faithful reproduction of the classic Melcor 1731 – widely regarded as the warmer predecessor to modern 2520-style op-amps.

The X731 op-amp produces vibrant, clean and lifelike tones at moderate levels, but can be pushed into pleasing mild saturation at higher gain settings. This saturation ranges from subtle warmth to more obvious colouration, yet always remains musical and ear-friendly. The design accepts any discrete op-amp conforming to the +/-16v, 2520 pinout standard, offering flexibility for future upgrades.
