Tama's Star Maple snare represents a deliberate rethink of traditional maple shell design. The 14” × 6.5” drum combines maple's signature bright, open character with the body and warmth typically associated with solid-shell construction. This hybrid approach stems from an unconventional shell architecture: a 2mm solid maple core sandwiched between cross-laminated plies, all compressed to a mere 5mm total thickness. The result is a snare that captures maple's natural articulation without sacrificing depth.
The shell construction allows Tama to deliver tonal range across a broader frequency spectrum than conventional maple drums. Chrome die-cast hoops (MDH14-8) with eight lugs provide consistent bearing surface and tuning stability, whilst the Linear-Drive strainer and butt (MLS50A/MLS50B) enable responsive, predictable snare wire engagement. The Charcoal Brown Paraiso wrap adds visual weight without compromising the shell's acoustic properties. At 7.4kg, the drum remains portable whilst maintaining the mass required for sustained resonance.
