Since 1996, the SPL DeEsser has revolutionised vocal processing with its groundbreaking Auto Dynamic technology that eliminates harsh sibilance whilst preserving the natural character of any voice. The newly redesigned Mk2 version maintains the same exceptional processing qualities as its predecessor but now features premium solid aluminium knobs and an updated aesthetic, housing two independent mono DeEssers in a single 19″ rack unit. This unique device automatically detects problematic sibilant frequencies and mixes them back into the main signal phase-inverted, effectively cancelling out S-sounds without affecting neighbouring frequencies.

The intelligent Auto Dynamic function proves invaluable for maintaining consistent de-essing intensity even when input levels fluctuate due to varying microphone distances – perfect for both inexperienced voice-over artists and demanding live situations. The dedicated Female/Male switch adapts the processing to different voice characteristics, with Male mode targeting lower-frequency S-sounds around 6 kHz and Female mode focusing on higher frequencies near 7 kHz. However, optimal results come from experimenting with both positions regardless of the vocalist’s gender, as individual voice characteristics vary significantly.

Unlike traditional DeEssers that rely on compressor-based processing with broad bandwidth compression (often spanning two octaves), the SPL DeEsser’s precision approach avoids common side effects like twanging or lisping. The S-Reduction LED display provides clear visual feedback of processing intensity from 0 dB to -20 dB in 2 dB increments, whilst the relay hard bypass circuitry ensures immediate signal redirection during power faults, maintaining audio integrity in critical applications.
