Seymour Duncan’s SSL-1 Vintage Staggered pickups capture the authentic sonic character of 1950s Stratocaster guitars through meticulous attention to period-correct construction methods. These pickups feature hand-ground alnico 5 rod magnets paired with heavy Formvar magnet wire, wound using a special pattern that produces the bright, glassy bell tone synonymous with classic Strat pickups. The treble attack cuts through with crisp immediacy whilst maintaining articulate and focused low-end response, allowing chords to ring out with exceptional note-to-note clarity.
Each three-pickup set includes standard wound neck and bridge pickups alongside an RWRP (reverse wind reverse polarity) middle pickup that provides noise cancellation when using in-between switch positions. Since 1978, Seymour Duncan has maintained authentic construction standards by using period-correct Forbon flatwork in the proper colour and thickness, complete with accurate magnet stagger patterns. Every pickup includes waxed and tinned cloth pushback hook-up wires and traditional keyed bottom plates.
Hand-built in Santa Barbara, California, these vintage output pickups undergo traditional assembly processes including hand-filed flatwork and lacquered bobbins that mirror Fender’s Golden Age manufacturing techniques. The pickups are potted in a specialised wax formulation to prevent microphonic squealing during high-volume performance. Available with either right or left-handed pole piece stagger configurations, the SSL-1 series accommodates both 6 and 7-string guitar applications.
