Seymour Duncan's SSL-1 Vintage Staggered pickups capture the authentic bell-like tone and sparkle that made 1950s Stratocasters legendary. These pickups feature hand-ground alnico 5 rod magnets paired with heavy Formvar magnet wire, wound using a special pattern that produces that distinctive bright, glassy sound. The treble response is crisp and immediate, whilst the low end stays articulate and focused, allowing chords to ring out with exceptional note-to-note clarity.
This three-pickup set includes standard wound neck and bridge pickups, plus a reverse wound reverse polarity (RWRP) middle pickup that cancels noise when using the in-between switch positions. Since 1978, Seymour Duncan has maintained period-correct construction methods, using authentic Forbon flatwork in the proper colour and thickness, along with historically accurate magnet stagger heights.
Each pickup comes fitted with waxed and tinned cloth pushback hook-up wires and traditional keyed bottom plates. The flatwork is hand-filed, assembled, and lacquered using the same techniques employed during Fender's golden era. Hand-built in Santa Barbara, California, these pickups are potted in Seymour Duncan's proprietary wax formulation to prevent microphonic squealing during high-volume performance.
