The FOOZ breaks new ground by capturing not just the sound of analog synthesisers, but the hands-on creative process that makes them so inspiring. While many guitar pedals attempt to mimic synth tones, few offer the tactile interactivity and modular approach that defines true analog synthesis. This innovative pedal combines multiple synthesis blocks—oscillator, filter, LFO, and envelope—in one cohesive unit, allowing them to interact and create the unique textures that make analog synths so captivating.
At its core, the FOOZ uses a heavily saturated square-wave fuzz to turn your guitar into the ‘oscillator’, providing an excellent foundation tone that works brilliantly on its own. The signal then passes through a versatile filter section that can be configured as either a Low Pass Filter (modelled on classic synth designs) or a Band Pass Filter that behaves more like a traditional wah pedal. A comprehensive LFO and Envelope follower provide the modulation sources, with the LFO controlling overall volume and filter frequency, while the Envelope can modulate both the filter and LFO depth and rate.
This interconnected design makes the FOOZ remarkably versatile, functioning as everything from a straight fuzz or tremolo effect to an auto-wah, rhythmic filter, or “cocked” wah setting. Most surface controls can be assigned to an external expression pedal (sold separately), further expanding the creative possibilities. Seymour Duncan describes it as an Analog Fuzz Synthesizer that brings the spirit of synth creativity directly to guitar, inspired by both iconic guitar tones and the flexibility of modular synthesis.
