Built as a USB 1.1 (UAC1) MIDI remote control, the ARC USB offers native compatibility with both Windows and Mac OS X systems without requiring additional drivers or setup procedures. TotalMix FX automatically detects and communicates with the device upon connection, allowing it to coexist with other remote controls without interference. The unit's compatibility extends across RME's entire range of audio interfaces supported by TotalMix FX, reaching back to models released in 2001, whilst also supporting direct connection to newer devices like the UFX Series, 802 FS, UCX II and MADIface XT II for standalone operation.

The ARC USB's bus-powered design draws minimal current whilst utilising USB 1.1 standards, making it remarkably reliable over extended cable runs where other bus-powered devices typically fail. Standard USB 2 cables of 5-10 metres work perfectly, and even inexpensive cable extensions maintain stable operation. For longer distances exceeding 20 metres, RME recommends active USB 2 extension cables. The device can simultaneously control multiple interfaces, with TotalMix FX's Key Commands dialogue automatically adapting to the currently selected audio interface, allowing users to assign specific functions to each respective interface for seamless operation.
