Born from the creative partnership between Grammy Award–winning guitarist John Mayer and master luthier Paul Reed Smith, the PRS Silver Sky represents a meticulous reimagining of the classic single–coil electric guitar. This instrument combines the cherished characteristics of legendary 1963 and 1964 vintage guitars with contemporary craftsmanship and innovation. Years of careful development have resulted in a guitar that captures the warmth and familiarity of treasured old instruments while offering the precision and reliability of modern construction.
The Silver Sky features several distinctive design elements that set it apart from traditional single–coil guitars. The headstock utilises PRS’s trademark design but inverted to suit Mayer’s playing preferences and maintain consistent string length behind the nut for improved tuning stability. Vintage–style closed–back tuners incorporate PRS’s locking mechanism, while the steel tremolo system uses patented PRS design with Gen III knife–edge screws, set flush to the body for downward pitch movement only.
The guitar’s 635JM single–coil pickups provide a full, rounded tone with musical high frequencies that avoid harshness or ice–pick characteristics. Players can choose between rosewood or maple fretboard options, each with a 7.25” radius – the maple version features the original 635JM neck shape, while the rosewood option has subtly modified shoulders for a more rounded feel. Additional premium appointments include a bone nut, curved metal jack plate for easy cable connection, retooled knobs, and PRS’s double–action truss rod accessible from the headstock front.
