Pro-Ject's Tube Box S2 is a phono pre-amplifier built around a pair of ECC83 valves, a choice that sets it apart from solid-state designs. Rather than relying on operational amplifiers, the discrete circuit architecture colours the sound with remarkable warmth and a laid-back character that analogue enthusiasts actively seek. The compact aluminium chassis houses fully discreet circuitry, dual mono signal paths, and dual power supplies–all scaled to fit in your hand without sacrificing sonic performance.
Both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges work with the Tube Box S2, thanks to switchable input impedance and gain settings accessed via front-panel controls. Precise two-stage RIAA equalisation (passive and active) ensures accurate tonal recovery across the frequency range. A subsonic filter button removes rumble below audible frequencies. Gold-plated RCA connectors, polystyrene capacitors in the signal path, ultra-low-noise FET input stages, and a well-filtrated high-voltage anode supply all contribute to signal integrity. The sandwich construction–aluminium exterior with metal shielding–minimises vibration and electromagnetic interference from nearby components.
