Since its introduction in 1997, the TLM 103 has redefined what modern studio recording can achieve, becoming one of Neumann’s most celebrated microphones and setting the benchmark for contemporary studio standards. Originally conceived as an affordable alternative to the legendary U 87, this transformerless cardioid condenser microphone has earned its place as a modern classic through its pristine, clear sound and breathtaking definition. The TLM 103 features a large diaphragm condenser capsule derived from the classic K67/87 capsule, but with a more contemporary voicing that includes a wide presence boost for frequencies above 5 kHz, making vocals and solo instruments pop out of the mix effortlessly.

The microphone’s technical specifications are truly impressive, boasting an incredibly low self-noise of only 7 dB-A that places it among the quietest microphones available today. With high sensitivity of 23 mV/Pa, the TLM 103 ensures ultra-low noise performance even when paired with budget preamps, audio interfaces, or vintage tube equipment. Its ability to handle enormous sound pressure levels up to 138 dB without preattenuation, combined with a vast dynamic range of 131 dB, makes it exceptionally versatile for capturing everything from soft whispers to thunderous bass drums without adding noise or distortion.

As part of Neumann’s TLM series, the microphone employs a transformerless output stage that minimises transmission losses and ensures immediate, uncoloured sound reproduction with clear, powerful bass response even at the highest signal levels. While initially designed for project studios and broadcast applications, the TLM 103’s outstanding performance quickly gained recognition in renowned studios as a modern-sounding alternative to the U87. Its distinctive tapered headgrille design maintains the classic Neumann aesthetic, while its authoritative midrange and impressively deep yet controlled low end make it perfect for speech, vocals, drums, guitar amps, piano, and classical spot recording applications including cello and double bass.
