Modal Electronics' Element One is an 8–voice virtual–analogue synthesiser engineered for sound designers seeking sophisticated oscillator architecture without the complexity of pure FM. Built on 64 high–resolution VA oscillators—up to 8 per voice—the Element One delivers classic subtractive synthesis paired with 40 distinct waveform algorithms, from foundational sine, pulse, triangle, and sawtooth through advanced cross–modulation techniques including sync, ring modulation, and wave–folding.

Two independent oscillator groups support everything from vintage parameter control and oscillator drift to contemporary techniques like bit–crushing, smooth morphing, and filtered noise generation. The signal path routes through a choice of ladder filters including 4–pole morphable lowpass, balanced morphable lowpass, state variable with bandpass or notch modes, and high–pass variants from 1– to 4–pole configurations, each featuring drive control. Firmware Version 2 introduces frequency modulation algorithms (FM Saw:Square, FM Square:Square, FM Tri:Square) and noise–amplitude–modulated waveforms, expanding tonal range significantly.

The oscillator toolkit includes hard sync variants across saw, square, and triangle with blendable sub–oscillators one octave below the fundamental, fractal sync algorithms with cycle–by–cycle asymmetry control, and complex modulation sources like chaos modes combining ring modulation with randomisation. Spread modes stack detuned oscillators to create lush, evolved tones, whilst reverse waveforms and window amplitude sync unlock textural territory typically reserved for modular systems, making the Element One suitable for both rhythm production and evolving pad design.
