Gibson's legendary J-45 returns with the Murphy Lab 1942 Banner J-45 Heavy Aged, a meticulously crafted tribute to the holy grail of vintage acoustic instruments. Luthiers in Bozeman, Montana have recreated the most celebrated version of this iconic workhorse, complete with thermally aged red spruce top that captures the tonal character of a long-cherished heirloom. The hand-scalloped red spruce X bracing is fitted with hot hide glue for superior tonal response, while the historic-style burst finish is hand-sprayed using traditional nitrocellulose lacquer.
Built with solid mahogany back and sides, this instrument features authentic period appointments including bone nut, saddle, and bridge pins. The rosewood open slot bridge maintains the rectangular shape found on the earliest J-45 models, complemented by strap-style open-back tuning machines with cream buttons. The tortoise shell-coloured pickguard retains the original teardrop shape, while single-ply binding graces both top and back.
The Murphy Lab Heavy Aged treatment sets this instrument apart, with skilled artisans applying decades of simulated play wear to create the unique character and feel of an original Golden Era Gibson. The heavily weather-checked finish shows authentic belt buckle wear, light arm wear, and subtle neck wear, paired with heavily aged nickel hardware. A period-correct Gibson Custom hardshell case completes this remarkable recreation of acoustic guitar history.
