Since its 1942 debut, the Gibson J-45 has remained the acoustic standard against which others are measured. Known as “The Workhorse,” this instrument has become one of the most recorded acoustic guitars ever made, earning that distinction through straightforward design, tonal consistency, and refined craftsmanship. Handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana by Gibson’s acoustic specialists, the J-45 Special delivers USA–built quality without the premium price tag of its Standard counterpart.
The Special’s round–shouldered body combines solid Sitka spruce with a solid mahogany back and sides, reinforced with traditional scalloped X–bracing for warm, balanced response across dynamic range. Its concert–depth profile sits slightly thinner than the Standard—yielding tighter bass articulation and improved playability. The utile neck employs a compound dovetail joint secured with hot hide glue, paired with a SlimTaper® profile, rosewood fretboard, and 12″ radius across 20 frets. Hardware includes a traditional rosewood belly–up bridge, TUSQ® saddle and bridge pins, and Grover® Rotomatic® tuners. An L.R. Baggs Element Bronze under–saddle pickup with soundhole–mounted volume control enables direct plug–in performance and recording versatility. The satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Honey Burst pairs with a premium soft–shell case.
Left–handed orientation maintains full specification parity with right–handed models. The 628.65 mm scale length and 43.815 mm nut width provide ergonomic comfort suited to extended studio or stage sessions.
