Sean Hurley's legendary '61 Fender Precision Bass has become the backbone of countless hit recordings, from John Mayer's intimate acoustic albums to sessions with music royalty like Ringo Starr and Annie Lennox. This L.A. studio veteran has built an impressive resume working with artists including Robin Thicke, Alanis Morissette, Vertical Horizon, and Colbie Caillat, all while serving as John Mayer's touring bassist.
Hurley's well–worn Precision Bass was the driving force behind Mayer's acclaimed Born and Raised album, as well as the more recent Paradise Valley release. The instrument's distinctive character and Hurley's masterful playing have made it one of the most recognisable bass sounds in contemporary music.
The Fender Custom Shop has now created an authentic replica of Hurley's prized instrument, available in three classic finishes. During the development process, Fender discovered Hurley's ingenious modification – a piece of foam tucked under the strings near the bridge to control sustain and tone. This observation led to the creation of a purpose–built Fender string mute system that players can engage or disengage mid–performance, marking the first time such a feature has been factory–installed on a Fender bass guitar.
