After more than four decades, the legendary CuNiFe-magnet Wide Range pickup has returned to bring that unmistakable vintage tone back to modern players. This authentic recreation captures the rich, bell-like humbucking character that made these pickups so coveted, offering full bass response and crystal-clear treble with remarkable “hi-fi” clarity that maintains attack and definition even under the most demanding playing conditions.
The story begins in the early 1970s when popular music was embracing the fatter, more powerful sounds that humbuckers could provide. Fender brought in renowned pickup designer Seth Lover to develop their own distinctive take on the dual-coil concept – something that would carry the unmistakable Fender character while offering higher output capabilities.
Lover’s innovative design utilised large bobbins paired with threaded CuNiFe-rod magnets, creating the brilliantly distinctive sound that became synonymous with that era’s Telecaster® Custom, Thinline, and Deluxe models. The chrome cover features the classic “3+3” exposed pole piece configuration and Fender logo, perfectly capturing that authentic vintage-’70s aesthetic. These original CuNiFe-magnet pickups became highly sought after across all musical genres until they vanished from production when the Telecaster Custom was discontinued in 1979.
