The Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Special 4–string represents nearly five decades of bass design refinement since the original 1976 launch. This instrument retains the signature oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning configuration, and iconic humbucking tone that made the StingRay a studio and stage staple, but with modernised ergonomics and electronics tailored to contemporary players. The sculpted neck joint grants unobstructed access to all 22 stainless steel frets, whilst the roasted maple neck paired with a maple fretboard delivers reliable tonal character and visual consistency across the headstock.
The StingRay Special features an 18–volt 3–band active preamp delivering volume, treble, mid, and bass control with extended clean headroom for punchy lows to vintage coloration. A single neodymium humbucker (dual pickup option available) drives output across the frequency spectrum without sacrificing articulation. Construction centres on select hardwood bodies with high gloss polyester finish, a vintage Music Man® top–loaded bridge fitted with nickel–plated steel saddles, and lightweight custom tuning machines with ergonomic clover design. The 5–bolt neck attachment ensures zero shifting, whilst overall weight reduction through refined body contours and lightweight hardware improves comfort and playing balance across extended sessions.
