In a surprising turn of events during the early 1960s, the legendary Kalamazoo factory made the bold decision to discontinue the Les Paul guitar and introduce the revolutionary SG design instead. This shift in guitar manufacturing philosophy naturally extended to bass production, marking a pivotal moment in electric bass history.
The SG design became the dominant force at the factory, with the EB-0 "SG" bass serving as the facility's primary electric bass offering during this golden period. Far from being a secondary consideration, this instrument quickly established itself as one of the most visually striking basses of its era, capturing the attention of musicians worldwide.
Notable players including Bill Wyman from The Rolling Stones, Jack Bruce of Cream, and The Who's John Entwistle adopted the EB style bass, helping to cement its reputation as a genuine hitmaker. These legendary musicians demonstrated the instrument's versatility and distinctive sound across various musical styles.
Today, Epiphone honours this heritage with the SG Bass E1, offering a faithful recreation of the vintage classic. This modern interpretation captures the authentic tone and playing feel of the original whilst avoiding the high costs and potential reliability issues associated with genuine vintage instruments.
