Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bassist Geezer Butler has finally found pickups worthy of his legendary name, collaborating with EMG to create the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass pickup sets. The partnership began in 2011 when Butler approached EMG founder Rob Turner with a specific mission: to recreate the classic bass tones that defined Black Sabbath's early recordings.
As Black Sabbath transitioned from studio work to touring in 2013, Butler recognised that achieving his authentic vintage sound required passive pickups with genuine vintage tone and feel. The challenge was clear – develop a pickup that could capture the essence of his early Black Sabbath recordings while incorporating modern reliability.
EMG's solution features a vintage-style passive P and PJ design enhanced with contemporary touches. The all-solderless P set utilises Alnico V pole pieces paired with custom wound coils, engineered to provide precisely the right amount of punch and grit. This combination produces the unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone characterised by deep, tight low end – the same sound heard on iconic tracks like "Iron Man," "War Pigs," and "Paranoid" from the 1970s. As Butler himself states: "I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away."
