Deering Goodtime 5-String Deco Acoustic Electric Openback Banjo

The Goodtime 5–String Deco Acoustic Electric is Deering's entry–level openback banjo retrofitted with a passive Kavanjo® humbucking pickup, eliminating feedback when plugged into amplifiers or PA systems. Handcrafted in San Diego since 1996, this model balances affordability with genuine American manufacturing–a rare proposition at this price point. Weighing just 4 pounds, it suits both children and touring musicians requiring a portable, road–ready instrument.

Construction centres on a three–ply violin–grade maple rim paired with a slender hard rock maple neck, delivering focused projection and tonal clarity across the midrange. The in–house rolled tension hoop, proprietary tailpiece design, and premium tuning hardware provide tuning stability and intonation consistency without premium pricing. A slim neck profile and low string action reduce finger fatigue, whilst smooth fretwork minimises buzzing–practical advantages for developing technique. The pickup integrates seamlessly into the openback format, allowing players to transition from acoustic rehearsal spaces into amplified settings without switching instruments.

Openback construction naturally favours bluegrass, folk, and traditional styles whilst remaining sonically neutral enough for studio layering, percussion arrangements, or effects–heavy experimental work when amplified. Experienced players often retain their Goodtime as a dependable workhorse even after acquiring premium models, due to its durability and consistent playability across decades of use.
