AlphaTheta's Chordcat is a chord–focused groovebox that shifts how beatmakers and producers approach harmonic composition. Unlike conventional step sequencers, it centres on algorithmic chord suggestion via Chord Cruiser mode–a feature that generates harmonic variations from a database of 110,000 possible chord combinations. The flat, knob–free design packs into a 247 × 111 × 33 mm chassis weighing just 400 grams, making it genuinely portable for studio work or field recording sessions.
The unit hosts 8 independent tracks, 16 saveable patterns, and 128 sequencer steps (8 bars) across a 16–step × 8–page interface. Three built–in effects–arpeggiator, delay, and ducker–map to an XY pad for real–time parameter control. Users can load from 145 sound presets plus 16 drum kits, each tunable via low–pass filter and amp envelope with per–pattern automation. Connectivity includes MIDI IN/OUT/THRU and USB Type–C for DAW integration; the bundled Chordcat Manager software enables bidirectional pattern exchange with Ableton Live Lite. Power arrives via six AA batteries (roughly 5 hours runtime) or USB bus supply (DC 5V, 500mA).
Key and scale locking constrains suggested chords to harmonic compatibility, indicated by LED feedback–useful for rapid harmonic exploration without hunting through incompatible voicings. The Running Direction feature rotates playback through four directions (right, down, clockwise, counterclockwise) across step–sequenced patterns, generating novel phrasing without manual reprogram. Pattern Chain allows linear song construction, supporting the workflow from sketch to finished arrangement without necessitating external sequencing software.
